Organize products into categories

Use the category, product, and unit hierarchy to keep different equipment types distinct without making the catalog unwieldy.

The three catalog levels

TrackDME organizes equipment as Product category → Product → Unit.

  • A Product category is a broad family, such as Wheelchairs.
  • A Product is an interchangeable equipment type with the same purpose and rental treatment, such as Standard wheelchair or Bariatric wheelchair.
  • A Unit is one physical, barcoded item belonging to exactly one Product.

When to create a separate Product

Create separate Products when equipment differs in a way that affects operations or the customer. Common dividing lines include rental price, purpose, power type, weight capacity, configuration, and whether one item can substitute for another. Brand and model only need separate Products when those details materially affect the rental.

For example, Wheelchairs may contain Standard wheelchair, Bariatric wheelchair, Transport wheelchair, Reclining wheelchair, and Power wheelchair. Each physical chair remains an individually tracked Unit.

Manage categories

Open Products and click Categories. From there you can add categories, rename them, and review how many Product types and Units belong to each one. Deleting a category does not delete its Products or Units. Those Products move to Uncategorized until you assign a new category.

You can also create a category while adding or editing a Product. The Products page groups the catalog by category and shows Product and Unit totals for each group.
