Oxygen Concentrator
A powered medical device that extracts and delivers concentrated oxygen to patients with respiratory conditions — one of the most commonly rented DME items.
Oxygen concentrators are electrically powered devices that pull ambient air through a molecular sieve to deliver high-concentration oxygen (87–95%) to patients with COPD, hypoxemia, heart failure, or other conditions requiring supplemental oxygen. They are one of the highest-volume rental items in the HME industry.
Unlike oxygen tanks, concentrators are durable, reusable devices — they last 5–7 years with proper maintenance and recirculate continuously. A single concentrator can serve dozens of patients over its lifetime. This makes serialized tracking, preventive maintenance scheduling, and cleaning verification especially important.
Medicare reimburses oxygen equipment under a 36-month capped rental model with a defined monthly allowable. After 36 months, the patient takes ownership of the equipment (for portable units); the supplier continues to provide supplies and maintenance. Tracking which unit was delivered, when, and which patient received it is required for proper billing and for any subsequent recall response.
Concentrators require a documented cleaning and functional-check cycle between patients. A supplier that re-rents a concentrator without verifying it has been cleaned and inspected faces both liability risk and accreditation jeopardy.
