Patient-Ready
The status of a DME unit that has been cleaned, inspected, and verified as safe and functional for deployment to the next patient.
'Patient-ready' is the operational status that a DME unit achieves after completing the full reprocessing workflow: return receipt, cleaning and disinfection, inspection for damage or wear, functional testing, and staging for re-deployment. Until a unit is patient-ready, it should not be available for checkout.
The patient-ready designation is important for both safety and compliance. From a patient safety standpoint, it ensures that no equipment reaches a new patient without having been verified clean and functional. From a compliance standpoint, it provides the documentation trail that accreditors and CMS auditors look for when reviewing infection control practices.
In a paper-based or spreadsheet-driven operation, patient-ready status is often informal — a shelf labeled 'clean,' a sticky note, or simply the warehouse lead's memory. The risk is that informal staging is prone to mixing: a 'dirty' unit lands on the clean shelf, or a unit skips inspection because a delivery is urgent.
A formal patient-ready gate in a tracking system means the unit's status field must be explicitly set to 'patient-ready' (or equivalent) by a staff member who confirms the reprocessing steps are complete — and that status change is timestamped, attributed, and stored as part of the device history record.
