Annual DMEPOS Re-Survey (2026)
CMS's 2026 policy change requiring accredited DMEPOS suppliers to undergo more frequent accreditation re-surveys — increasing scrutiny of operational records.
Effective January 1, 2026, CMS requires DMEPOS suppliers to be resurveyed and reaccredited at least once every 12 months instead of at least once every 36 months. The accreditation process includes an unannounced on-site survey.
The annual cycle does not begin immediately for every existing supplier. If a supplier's current three-year accreditation was issued before January 1, 2026, the annual resurvey and reaccreditation cycle begins when that existing accreditation expires. Suppliers obtaining initial accreditation on or after January 1, 2026 enter the annual cycle from the start.
For smaller independent suppliers who previously treated accreditation as a three-year cycle, the shift to annual scrutiny is a significant operational change. Suppliers that relied on paper logs, spreadsheets, or manual assembly of records for surveys now face a higher ongoing documentation burden.
The practical response is to move documentation to a system that generates records automatically as part of normal operations. Every scan-in, scan-out, reprocessing sign-off, and maintenance note creates an audit-ready record without any extra effort at survey time.
