A DMEPOS supplier is any entity enrolled with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to bill for durable medical equipment, prosthetics, orthotics, and supplies. The DMEPOS acronym covers the full scope of what these businesses provide, from oxygen equipment and hospital beds to orthotic braces and enteral nutrition.
To maintain DMEPOS supplier status, a business must satisfy applicable CMS supplier standards on an ongoing basis. These standards cover physical location, business hours, liability insurance, accreditation, and operational practices such as documenting the make, model, or another identifier for non-custom equipment supplied to a beneficiary.
DMEPOS suppliers may be audited by Medicare oversight contractors. Gaps in delivery documentation or equipment records can make it harder to support a claim or locate an item during a review.
Most DMEPOS suppliers billing Medicare must maintain accreditation, though CMS lists exemptions for certain products, professionals, and pharmacies. Accrediting organizations review quality and operational practices.
