A Medicare-enrolled business that provides durable medical equipment, prosthetics, orthotics, and supplies to beneficiaries.
A DMEPOS supplier is any entity enrolled with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to bill for durable medical equipment, prosthetics, orthotics, and supplies. The DMEPOS acronym covers the full scope of what these businesses provide, from oxygen equipment and hospital beds to orthotic braces and enteral nutrition.
To maintain DMEPOS supplier status, a business must satisfy all 30 CMS supplier standards on an ongoing basis. These standards cover physical location, business hours, liability insurance, accreditation, and operational practices such as maintaining a comprehensive product list and providing written delivery confirmation that includes serial numbers for applicable items.
DMEPOS suppliers are subject to audit by the CMS Recovery Audit Contractors (RACs), Unified Program Integrity Contractors (UPICs), and other oversight bodies. An audit that uncovers delivery records without serial numbers, or claims for items that cannot be physically located in the supplier's inventory system, can result in recoupment demands and referrals for fraud investigation.
Accreditation — currently mandatory for all DMEPOS suppliers billing Medicare — requires that the supplier demonstrate operational compliance across intake, delivery, infection control, complaint resolution, and quality management. The accrediting body verifies these systems on an ongoing basis, with surveys now conducted annually under the 2026 CMS changes.
