Route optimization turns a day's scheduled drop-offs and pickups into an ordered route. For a DME rental business, that usually means starting from the main warehouse, visiting every customer address for the day, and giving the driver an estimated arrival window for each stop.

The best routes are not only shortest by distance. A pickup can be valuable before a later drop-off if the returned product is the same type of equipment needed for the next customer. Good route planning also includes service time at each stop, traffic padding, and space for ordinary breaks, because a hospital bed delivery is not just a point on a map.

Manual sequencing still matters. Dispatchers often know local constraints a routing engine does not, like gated communities, facilities with receiving hours, or a customer who asked for afternoon delivery. A useful system lets the route be optimized first, then recalculates delivery windows when a person drags stops into a better order.
