In-Transit Equipment
Equipment that has left the warehouse in an assigned vehicle but has not yet been delivered to a customer or received back into the warehouse.
In-transit equipment is inventory between custody points. On an outbound route, the warehouse has scanned it into a van but the driver has not completed the customer dropoff. On a return route, the driver has scanned it at pickup but the warehouse has not checked it back in.
Keeping in transit separate from customer custody prevents a loaded van from being mistaken for a completed delivery. It also prevents a field pickup from increasing available warehouse inventory before the unit physically returns.
A reliable route workflow records the van, driver, order, and timestamp at each handoff. Dispatch can then distinguish what is still in the building, what is on a vehicle, what is with a customer, and what has returned for inspection or reprocessing.
